Stick grip and push to talk.

Hi guys,

I had a question concerning what you folks have used for a grip for your sticks and how you have mounted the push to talk buttons. I used some bike grips but the push to talk buttons are giving me fits.

I am wide open for help.

Just installed 2 of these. Quality pieces, good instructions. Haven't used them yet but they look nice and were simple to install

I went to either Leow's or Home Depot Aircraft supply dept ;) and got a chrome end cap. I forget what size it is, best measure the stick diameter before going. I did have to bend the little tabs out ever so slightly to make it a snug fit. They're in one of the drawers that contain different kinds of nick naks located in the hardware department. I drilled a hole in the center of it and attached the ptt to it using the hardware that came with the ptt switch. You can see it in my panel picture on the Sonexbuilders panel page Works like a champ!

Nice piece of walnut, caved to suit, and checkered. Simply small Radio Shack push button in top. Something to do on a day or evening when not feeling like doing any larger project. Single stick, so co-pilot's PTT button on panel next to right side throttle.

Also, small strip of piece of light weight mahogany under top longerons where they form top edge of cockpit makes nicer shoulder rails than sharp edge of angle, and adds a touch of class.

Little tip to assist sliding on the Ray Allen grips.. (they tend to stick to the powder coating as you get more of the grip on the stick.)

Get your air compressor duster/blow gun/fitting, and as you place the grip on the stick.. play a stream of compressed air close to the base of the stick grip as you push it down. Sounds complicated but the stream of compressed air expands the grip and it slides on real easy!

Use same method to slide it off again if required.

No need for soapy water, profanities etc

I first carved one out of a bit of walnut that was a friend's award plaque from Northrop Grunman. It was pretty. But when my youngest started racing BMX, I discovered the ODI line of " lock on" bicycle grips. They have a "tack" to them that makes them very grippy, even when gloved, cold, hot-n-sweaty, or whatever is thrown your way. They come in lots of different colors, from lime green, hot pink, to basic black, but the cool thing is how they lock in place: there are two aluminum lock rings that clamp them precisely where you want them. No air pressure, no alcohol, vegetable oil, or hair spray, just a two second twist with an allen wrench, and these babies STAY! There is a thick plastic end cap that is pinched between the grip and the bar (stick) end which is easily drilled for the PTT button. You can buy different lengths of the grips, so the flare where your hand rests can be where YOU want it to be. Me LIKEY.

They cost twenty or so a pair, and if you get tired of the color or want to refresh the grip, inserts are only ten bucks for two. BMX stores tend to have more choices than road bike stores.

I am a little dissapointed that you did not refine oil from your backyard into plastic and build a mold out of locally sourced scrap to make grips. That would have been a good read!
