OIL quick drain valve

OIL quick drain valve

Postby mike.smith » Sat Feb 15, 2014 2:55 pm

I have the AeroVee aluminum sump plate installed. The large hole in the center has the oil temp sender. The other hole is for a 1/4" NPT fitting. Rather than just a drain plug, I was thinking of installing a quick-drain valve. Has anyone else done this? Are you happy with it? Where did you get it? I did some searches but didn't find anything smaller than 3/8" NPT.

Thanks,
Mike Smith

Mike,
IIRC, there were some comments about available quick drain plugs in the Yahoo archives, you might do a search there. I don't know if they were about this 1/4" NPT fitting or not. It seems to me that if you put a quick-drain in a 1/4" hole you'd have maybe an 1/8" remaining orifice for the oil. That could slow the oil change process down.

I installed a quick by purchasing a oil sump plate from jbugs.com and had a larger tapping put in to accommodate a quick drain plug from Aircraft spruce. To use one of their quick drains the tapping has to be SAE. Also removed the screen and added a filter. Part numbers I used are Aircraft Spruce Curtis oil drain valve PN 05-03061, JBUGS.com Sump plate kit 16-8964, also order new studs. If interested the filter housing I used PN 9245. Accommodates Aviation filter CH84108-01 which can be safetied.

Hello Mike. Have you tried http://www.fumotousa.com or http://www.oildrainvalve.net? I've been thinking about installing a quick drain as well.

I decided against a quick drain since they all seemed to extend above the level of the sump plate so that contaminants would not make it to the hole at the top of the drain.

There's also the shiny "paste" (lead? lead by-products?) that ends up on the sump plate. It won't drain through the regular oil plug, but it would be possible to get a small improvised scraper in there and coax most of it out. There would be no way to do that through a quick-drain.

Have quick drain on Jabiru, noted same drain restriction, but it is very nice to be able to stick a hose on it and let it drain without splashing everything. Can still pull the quick drain every so often to clean out any residue if engine remains operational long enough to get to that point.

I filed a notch in the part of the Quick Drain that sticks up. All the oil drains now.
