Drill Press

Starting to tool up and wanting to buy a table top drill press. So far I've been disappointed in the units I've seen/read about online. Would like some recommendations for a decent unit that will work well for the build. Like most things I know you get what you pay for but I'm thinking there just might be the ideal drill press out there ghat doesn't cost an arm and a leg. All opinions invited and thanks in advance.

Dan I have been running a Delta 16" drill press for over 18 years now and it gets a lot of use in my cabinet business.Is it still made in America? I don't know,not much is anymore.I am a strong believer in buying North American made products. I try to buy Canadian made first and then US and am very seldom disappointed in the quality.I guess it boils down to how much use you will get from it.My Table saw is a General.It cost me dearly but I use it everyday and have never regretted it.My first saw I bought used and it was a General International,made in Taiwan. One is a Lincoln the other is an Escort.
Drill'in holes is fun especially with a Onex(I hope). :mrgreen:

I have a relatively cheap Ryobi press, and also a Ryobi bandsaw. So far they have worked fine. I don't think you need top tier tools to build a Sonex (though you might want them for yourself!).

Mike and Andy thank you for the responses. If I can find something that doesn't have a "wobbly" chuck I will be happy. Went to Lowes last night and they only had one Skil table top on display and I swear it is exactly the same unit as the others I have seen in that price range with different company names applied. Probably all made in the same factory in China. I'd rather pay a few dollars more for something made in North America. Do they make anything in North America anymore? Oh yeah that's right, the Onex is made in North America :D

Maybe it is because I am lazy and will be purchasing the machine angle component kit but there is no way this plane is only going o cost me $25k. I'm figuring on $35k to $45k. Am I wrong here?

I think it really depends what you plan on spending for your panel.and wether you and I buy the remaining sub kits all together to save on shipping and get the $2000 discount
Tail kit with crating $1575
Fuse kit with angled component $4550
Wing with pre-assembled spar
and angled component kit $8950
Landing gear tricycle $4600
Crating $225
= $18325
minus $2000 discount =$16325
Aerovee engine + $7000

For a grand total of $24900 before shipping and taxes

Now add your paint ,lighting,panel,prop
I will paint it myself,$500 materials
prop $1200
Panel-For me under $2500
lighting-$1000?
Approx $30000 plus the shipping and taxes for me around $4000 taxes and shipping will be around $1500 to my place
So yeah I'm now at around$35000

I'm doing machines angle components, pre-built spars, and a Jabiru 3300 engine and glass panel. I think all in my plane will be $45K - 50K. I'm willing to trade extra money to save build time. If I wanted to go the other way, I'm sure if I plans built, used an Aerovee, and used minimal instrumentation I could get it done for under $25K...maybe even a lot less. It's all a trade off of time vs. money. I want to fly and not spend 10 years building, so my money goes for the things that will save me time.
