Laying out the Instrument Panel

OK fellow aviators,

I am playing around with my panel layout (Onex) and would like to hear opinions as to "What would you do?" Money is an object - just don't know how much an object it may be. Keep it as far south of 5k as possible. Here is my thinking as of today: I live under Class B (KMEM). I would like a transponder for this reason and to be in the system on x-country's. I want a panel mounted radio. The MGL Xtreme with the EMS and AHARS. Compass and a turn/bank. Back up steam gauges? Power will be the Aerovee 2180.
So, let me have it...too much, filled with flaws, just right? Since my panel layout is on CAD, I can play with any idea and tape it to the cockpit for a trial fit.

Well sir, if it were me I'd recommend you keep it as light and simple as possible. Use the MGL Xtreme with AHRS and EMS, use that to drive a transponder, and add a simple COMM radio. Either the MGL single COMM or if money's an issue, I really like my FL-760. Go to Autozone and get a $5 suction cup compass to put on the front windshield right in front of the canopy bow and you're good there. Personally, I wouldn't mess with a secondary turn and bank. If you want a cheap "ball" that's always a nice thing to have and you can get cheap ones everywhere.

I don't have backup steam gauges and have never missed them. That will make it all the easier to wire the panel and you'll love having a light airplane to fly!

Remember, you can always add more stuff later if you ever miss anything specific.

Thanks for the tips...I think I have something that will give me what I am looking for. Lighter is definitely better. I will post a photo of my paper doll cut-out after I tape it to the instrument panel blank.

Hi Mike - it looks like on Sonex 1145 you extended the glare shield a bit further back into the cockpit from the instrument panel. Has this helped for reducing any glare on the instruments. How far back did you extend it. Thanks...Vern
