I found mine in the discount aviation section of AutoZone. I drilled a hole through the wind screen and mounted it with a small screw through the rubber suction cup. Works as designed and passed the DAR test.

If you can't find one at AutoZone, which I didn't. Try Pet Boys auto store. They have it in the store and on-line. Its a suction cup base that sticks to the windshield.

Charlie,
I prefer the iPad to the compass. Having moved to the Midwest from the east coast, I am somewhat dependent on it. Had the iPad ever crapped out I would probably still be up there. It's all corn out here. However, you need a compass to be legal even for VFR, though it does not specify how good of a compass.

I may get a better compass. When my kids learn to fly they should learn the hard way so they can boast about it to their kids someday. My Waiex will also have a nav com for VORs so the airplane can be used for the private checkride.

Here is what I did. This compass was found at the local auto parts store. It even is adjustable and cost less than $10. I have it mounted on a bracket fastened to the panel. It sits on a pad of velcrow to dampen the aircraft vibrations that were causing it to spin.

A thread about who can find the cheapest compass to put in their 35K airplane ... I love it! I also gotta admit to being pretty dependent on the GPS these days.

I have a fairly expensive compass in Myunn:

Sold by Aircraft Spruce:

But to tell the truth this was a gift to me from a fellow pilot. I don't see me spending nowhere near that much for a compass. It is extremely accurate and well made ... but for the money it should be!

It's a common misconception that you need a compass to be legal in an experimental plane. For "daylight, VFR only" there are no mandatory instruments for experimentals.

Yes, I know your DAR doesn't believe it, but it's true.

Joe Norris is a DAR who does understand the rules and has stated this information before.

Hi Michael,
my AP signed off SNX without a compass.
The rules say you need something that indicates magnetic direction and my Dynon does.
I tried a cheap ball just in case but it indicated very different to my Dynon and GPS so I didn't bother.
with a GPS on the panel and one in my pocket, I shouldn't get lost.
Doug.
ps- i have one of those very expensive SIRs in a box, its a piece of art!

Again, for VFR day only there is no "rule" requiring any instruments what-so-ever.
