We got our trainer out for the first time in a couple years. I overestimated my ability to recover via the buddy box. Too rusty.

I used to fly gas R/C back in the day but lately I'm a believer in electric. I love the Parkzone stuff, especially the T-28 and P-47. I always keep a few foamies at my hangar for calm nights!!

I have been in and out of the hobby since I was 8. Hard to keep in it while building the Waiex.

I got back into it at age 23, when I had been out of it since I was 15. My helicopter instructor showed me where his R/C field was. I was out solo and saw his car there. Carefully went back IFR (I follow roads) so I could ride back after. He was flying when I got there. The smell of burned glow fuel triggered a strong nostalgic reaction. Probably why I have not gone electric.

He asked if I wanted to try it then was amazed that I could fly. Then I had to confess my years of experience.

I was into RC before I became a pilot. First gas, then helicopters and then the foam electrics were just coming online. I quit when I went for my private license 6 years ago. Sold most of my planes but kept my gas helicopter and a large sailplane. I've been thinking of firing them back up but not sure I could find all my support gear. My nephew went through a lot of it when he found out I gave it up. I understand you don't even buy a radio/receiver crystals anymore.

Crystals - wow. Were any of your planes silk and dope? I at least graduated to Monokote in 1990. I just gave away my '90 Kyosho concept 30 for parts. A guy here still flies one.

My first chopper was a concept 30. upgraded to a Caliber 30 with a 37 motor in it. I understand its now out of production.

My HiTech transmitter had the fancy frequency module you could chose any of the 72MH freqs. You just had to buy a specific crystal for the receivers. Then check out the freq at the field from the board.

I guess I need to upgrade all that if I come back into the hobby.

Those escapements you may have are out of date too.

Yeah, my first RC plane used an escapement. Our modern equipment is certainly a wonder.

My dad had escapements. He built some of his own gear. That technology was way before my time. I could see making a scale model of the Waiex someday. I think they have silver Monokote. I am tempted to kit bash our Sig Kadet kit and make it a Y tail.

My first radio was a couple hundred bucks I think. Was a Christmas gift in the late 70's and was AM gear. When I got back into it my helicopter radio with a gyro was a little less than $200. It was FM. My latest is the new stuff, a little over $100 and has Y tail mixing as one of the default features.
