F08-08 Flap Detent Angle

Postby vernd » Tue May 13, 2014 11:59 pm

Hi all -

I know that some of you have modified the "flap detent angle" to add an additional notch of flap and some have also modified the shape of the notch.
Just about to start making this part - so looking for any guidance around some of these modifications. Are they worthwhile - or best to just build per plans. What have your experiences been with the modifications and would you make them again.
Any guidance or thots appreciated.
Thanks much.....

Third notch half way between original two notches no big deal to add. However, would modify all notches to provide more relief at aft end of the pockets. Bend on top of flap lever causes lever to twist when pulled. That twist tends to bind the lever in the notches, pulling harder tries to twist it more and locks even harder. Been there, done that, could not retract flaps when checking stall characteristics on first flight. Eventually converted to electric flap operator. Switch right next to throttle, no need top move hand from throttle, and with hydraulic brakes, can keep shoulder belts tight from takeoff through landing.

Great advice on the notches, Thanks. I'll be making this part soon as well.

Thanks for the info David. On the relief at the back of each notch - any guidance on how much clearance to add?
Thanks again....Vern

I cut each notch deeper into the angle at at aft end of notch resulting in back of notch at about a at about a 7 to 8 degree angle.
