Flying with an ICD (defibrillator)

A question that I cannot find much information on. I would like to hear from anyone with medical experience, flight experience, and even those with educated opinions.

I have a dear friend that would really love to fly with me. He is in his early 70's and is on oxygen. But more concerning is his I.C.D. (implanted cardioverter-defibrillator). I'm not certain that putting him in the limited space of the small cockpit is the right thing to do. I have wondered what may occur should his ICD begin firing jolts at him for any reason. I don't want to refuse him a ride but at the same time I worry for his safety and mine.

Any input is welcomed. I cannot find much to go on as far as regulations or even suggestions so I thought it best to ask here ...

I'd say that it's a question for his doctor. You're not going to find any specific FAA regulations on the subject. If you're worried about the device interfering with the aircraft systems, I'm pretty sure there is zero chance of that happening. As for the aircraft systems/vibration etc.. interfering with the ICD... again I'd say it's a question for his doctor.

Thanks for the reply. I had always intended to speak with his doctor as he will have to give his blessing. I also will require permission from his wife.

I have received some excellent information off-line about this. I was just looking to see if anyone had ever dealt with this before seeing as how we have many pilots, CFIs, and builders on this group.

Being a grumpy old senior citizen my friend will wonder why I'm making such a fuss about this but it isn't only about his safety ... it's also about mine!

I have had some experience transporting sick/injured folks before, but they always had a caretaker to ride with them so I could concentrate on flying. Your concern is certainly legitimate.

Not to compare the elderly to pets, but anyone who does fly with (uncaged) pets run a similar sort of risk. I will likely be one of those people, flying with my dog was part of the reason I chose a 2-seater over the Onex.
