Noise! What head set are you using?

Postby Onex107 » Tue Apr 29, 2014 11:06 pm

The Onex cockpit noise is so loud I have trouble hearing radio calls. What headset are you using? Are all the noise cancelling ANR head sets the same as far as noise cancelling goes? I don't need Blue Tooth or cell phone input. I wear hearing aids and some of the units I have tried conflict with the aids. They seem to cancel each other. The prices range from $350 to $1000 and all have the same amount of db noise cancelling.

I have the Bose X aviation headsets. The second to newest generation (not the A20's, but the design one older). I use them for work and also in my Waiex and love them. Very comfortable during long trips and good noise cancellation as long as the batteries last. That's my biggest complaint though...if the batteries die, they're terrible!

They used to be $1,000 or so but now that Bose has the newer design, you can get used ones for a lot cheaper. I've also heard good things about the LightSpeed Zulu's but have never tried them.

Clarity Aloft! They are basically earplugs with a speaker inside. All day comfort and great noise reduction. Perfect with glasses, small and light. ( and no, I don't work for them ) My wife loves hers too. You might be able to wear them instead of the hearing aid...

I used to use a cheap anr set from Altronics. I however found the aerovee that noisy I bought a set of Zulu 2's and they are so much better I just can't describe. True they were expensive but worth every penny I thought, plus way more comfortable on a long trip with sunglasses on too.

Just on a side note,, is there much difference in cabin noise comparing an aerovee to a jabiru in the sonex? I have my aerovee in a high wing tail dragger and was just curious. The sonex I have on order is aerovee powered so I guess I'll find out soon enough anyway.

I have both a cheap ANR headset and a Quiet Technologies in ear headphones. The ANRs reduce a lot of the noise but are not very comfortable.

If you have hearing aids, I'd suggest an in ear like QT or Clarity Aloft. The QT is built by an audiologist and uses hearing aid speakers. You just have to be able to live with something stuck in your ears. Plus side is my hair looks great after a flight!

Some of my helicopter pilot buddies from my Sikorsky days use CEP in their helmets. I have been thinking about upgrading a couple of my headsets.

The cool thing is they work like earplugs with speakers, probably like CA or similar. With the passive protection of the muff added the noise reduction is big. No ANR or batteries. I can tell you it is quite loud in a UH60!

I have a plain headset, and for longer trips add regular foam earplugs underneath it. Works for me, and cheap.

Aerovee engine. Cheap ASA headset, and a standard pair of David Clarks. No active or passive noise cancelling. No trouble with noise at all. Sounds nice inside the ear cups.

Jab 3300: Lightspeed Zulu 2s, Lightspeed PFX (arrived this week) and Halos. Halos are great, nothing bad to say about them, but the Zulu 2s are _really_ good headsets and are excellent for passengers. The PFXs I will give some feed back on after today's flight.
