Mojave Experimental Fly In - April 19th

Next weekend in Mojave, CA is the second annual Mojave Experimental Fly-In; already appears like it is going to be bigger and better than last year when it was the busiest day (by number of operations) in Mojave history.

Here are the details:
Fly-in 10-2pm Saturday 19th
Dinner 6pm Saturday 19th
Fly-out 7-10am Sunday 20th

Concept:
A gathering of the leading Experimenters currently involved in GA. The event opens Saturday with a mid-day fly-in from 10 to 2. There will be a dinner starting at 6 with awards and speaker Paul Dye. Then early morning on Sunday we gather at the airport for the departure of the show aircraft.

Record Setting:
The NAA will be onsite the week of the event for experimenters to set records. Please contact the NAA to submit a sanction request if you are interested in setting a record.

Awards Dinner:
At the awards dinner on Saturday night four awards will be presented for best mods in the preceding 12 months. The awards will be best design, best build, best test, and the most prestigious best experimenter. More details here (Awards Description). During the dinner there will be a live band "Shame and Glory", and Paul Dye will be presenting on applying the lessons he learned on the Space Shuttle program to flight testing experimental aircraft.

I like the vernier mixture control. I wish that I had installed one.

Kip - yea, i am hoping that the fine control of the vernier helps make the Aerocarb a bit easier to tame... we shall see

I landed at the flyin and was surrounded by the general public and several sonex builder/flyers. Good to talk with you all; Harvey, Dean, and Nick. Nick, did you win anything for that awesome panel? I left with my RV friends back for San Diego and didn't get to say goodbye but it was a great little flyin. There was lots of interest in the Waiex ( my RV friends were slightly jealous at the attention I was getting but would never say so ;)

It was great to see you, Harvey, Jim, and Dean on Saturday. What an awesome turnout! Every time I push out the Waiex for display at an event at Mojave I am taken back by the attention that it gets.. and even when it is parked next to aircraft like Boomerang, the GP-5, or P-51s, or whatever else decides to show up that day. I think it is for two reasons - first, people love to look at projects with the cowling off, etc - and two, I think that the Sonex family represents such a practical, obtainable goal in a lot of people's minds that it is a real attention getter.

But I did vow to myself that that was the last time I am going to push my airplane a half mile down the ramp.. the next time she will be under her own power for sure! I need to stop working so much and just get Waiex #142 done.

Other than all of the world records that were set last week, (http://www.mojaveflyin.com/2014/04/after-action-report.html) There were generic nominations for awards, from which one or more of four prizes could be won for the Best Design, Best Build, Best Test, and over-all Best Experimenter of the year. My custom instrument panel was nominated, and although I did not win I did take home second place for the Best Build of the year! I lost to Kevin Eldredge who deveolped a 409 cubic inch conversion for the Lycoming 360 (http://www.ace-performance.com).. I was truly humbled to have been nominated and didn't feel bad about losing to Kevin!

I especially like this one, my friend Bob told me to stand next to Jim's awesome looking Waiex and make the face of "contemplation of what I will do with mine when it is completed in the near future"
