It was obvious to me that this was the weakest part of airplane. I welded a plate with room for 3 AN3 bolts on mine

Yeah, I’m wondering if it needs 4. Getting a nut and bolt on behind the gear leg may prove difficult. Three has got to be better than one!

Yes, they weld and you drill.

Removing the hydraulic line, putting it back on, and bleeding is no big deal. But I don't think you need to. Axle back on with new thing welded on, brake on and lined up, transfer holes.

Hi all,
Yes you can only pick up 3 holes. Due to the gear leg and angle of axle socket.
Hamebone - dont know how much shop set up you have . can you order some 4130 1/8 or whatever thickness you need( from spruce) 3in x 3 ft is the smallest
make your own squares . 4 holes for bolts, and center hole for axle . Due some good measuring.
bolt up using a all metal bolt and nut, (welding going to get very hot) use existing tabs to hold in place , easy for the welder. Why i say 4 holes? well dont have to worry about which hole u cant use when you index the tab. use 3 an3 bolts.
easy really. do you have a bandsaw? grinder? scotch brite wheel? drill press? large unibit?
harbor freight may have some holiday sales yet.

Good luck keep us up to date on your progress.

try just google 4130 steel sheet 3inx 3in by whatever thickness u need
michael.

Bryan - I put a piece of light card over the hole pattern, and scribbled on it with a pencil to transfer the hole pattern to the card. The shop was happy with that. It should be close, and if it isn’t, I can always drill the holes a little bigger.

Michael - I don’t have those skills, or the equipment, but thanks for the advice. It’s only costing $125 from the machine shop.

Hi all,

Some good news. Tracy O’brien responded to my email contact off the marine website.
He indicated that he has c-90 brake systems , chromemoly replacement landing gear legs, and motor mounts for the legacy sonex for jab 3300.
I asked specifically if he has a website for the sonex products, and if he has the steel sq. backing plates
for the sonex axles.
Awaiting his reply. His direct email is tracy@localaccess.com

I hope this helps some of you looking for his products.

best,
michael.

Thanks. I ended up having the existing ones modded locally.

It should! I’m sure I’ll find something ride to break next.

Putting one wheel on, it had to be too loose or too tight to get the cotter pin through the axle. I had no choice but to make it too tight. Perhaps it will loosen up with use.

The parts look good. I've made some thin aluminum shims to take up the slop in the axle and get it just right.
