I can't speak to what is normal for wiring the tach, but this thread indicates some voltage regulators work for that purpose and others do not:

Well ..., that's disappointing. Informative, but disappointing. I suppose I'll keep moving while mulling the consequences.

The first two things that come to mind are:

1) Allow an option for *not* using the alternator as a backup. I don't really like that, but it's easy.
2) Figuring out how to use the P-Lead of the primary ignition as a backup. I don't like that either :-)

I also have an inductive pickup that is intended to clip around an ignition wire to provide a tach signal. I bought it a long time ago but never tried it. It may be time to give it a try.

Thanks a Bunch,

Wes

Hi wes! Iagree about the delta alternator, vs a single phase one. my aerovee is single. as far as the tack signal, I didnt connect my pickup to anything on the pri or sec ing system. I used an auto crank sensor, looking at the flywheel magnets, and adjusted the distance from the flywheel outwards to about 6..7.. inches radially, and was able to get reliable and accurate tack. it does pretty much the same as the plug lead sensor, but is completely independant.

did you figure out why the battery was getting hot? something new maybe?

Oh, Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year!

Could you provide a link to the Crank Sensor you used? And maybe a pic of the installation?

As far as the hot battery, I'm just waiting on the new regulator.

Glad to see you still drop by the forum on occasion.

Thanks,

Wes

Sure! simple... O'rielys auto, autozone, NAPA, just a good supply place, and look at the crank sensor for a 1999 Dodge Dakota V6 engine. do not remember the cost 8 years ago, but shouldnt be too much,. I will leave myself a note to get a pix thru the cowl top opening next time I am at hanger, or if I cant get a good one, maybe from my build log, but the pix may be poor from a piece of paper. May be a couple of days!

I have not gone anywhere, yet, and am for sure watching the blog quite often, and am following your progress for sure!

An up date, due to my forgetting... I had a double rpm reading with the crank sensor, because my flywheel has 2 magnets on it, and i remenber having to make a devide by 2 circuit to make my meter device work. that may just be a need for the antique gauge i used. maybe this wont work as easily as i might have alluded to..
