Cockpit Noise Level

hey all,

finally got to log some flight time in my sonex and note some decibels while in flight. i flew the plane since it was bumpy and my girlfriend captured the #'s by holding the sound meter at headset level between us as before. the DBs actually covered a smaller range than expected, ranging between 109 and 112 at RPMs 2500 through 3200. these are hardly higher than those i took on the ground, which were between 103 and 112, at RPMs 1000 through 2500. interesting that the Dbs were highest at 2500 RPMs at 112, whether in flight or on the ground. this will be my basis going forward for any sound abatement efforts i make. all this was to be able to better hear radio transmissions made by others, especially when in the pattern.

also interesting is that after changing a few settings on my MGL v10 transceiver, as suggested by rainier at MGL avionics, i have reduced almost all the noise and static i was hearing at all RPMs. all that is left is loud background static from some of the transmissions made by others, usually some distance away. squelch (SQL) changes didnt help either. i didnt have the background noise issues on my piper cherokee with an MX 170B.
