If I ever finish my plane, I want to try rigging up an arduino with a microphone and a speaker and try doing active noise cancellation for the cockpit.

It probably wont work but it would be fun to try. If it worked someone already would have put one on the market.

Sikorsky has done it on the S76 and S92. They have also done active vibration control to make the ride smoother. The interesting thing is that it is the same math, and they use the same computers. For ANC they hook up to noise generators and for AVC they control shakers.

ANC cabins have been done on turboprops as well. That makes me wonder why it hasnt been scaled down to RVs of various flavors you'd think there would be a market there. It would be way lighter than a muffler and not take much current either.

What happened to the concept of "Fly Neighbourly"? - The noise, from unmuffled aircraft exhausts, is a significant environmental pollutant.

In Australia airfields are being closed all over the country - a common complaint/reason, is the nosies the aircraft make, as they fly over.

personally, i agree. however, weight gain and power loss, especially in low-powered aircraft, can be significant to performance, perhaps even dangerous. as bryan reminded me earlier in this topic, weight is the enemy. so its a trade-off and a personal decision with the noise.

airports are being closed in the US too, often for development (read profit), but using the excuses of lead pollution and noise levels. i personally decided to sell my 25 year-owned cherokee (which had a muffler and was relatively quiet) largely due to not wanted to deal with the ongoing saga of 100LL. (I flew a CGS hawk ultralight for 11 years before that...)

we are off topic i know. i am done... LOL !

Here in the states we have noisy Hondas. A much bigger problem than my airplane.

In much of the US its just not a concern. Im in farm country for example. A good portion of the SW US is desolate desert where there are no neighbors.

You can make all the excuses you like.
Point the finger at other pathetic noise makers.
There is no justification for being any noisier than absolutely necessary.
It is a demonstration of antisocial behaviour, that will one day result in legislation ie impact negatively on the activity that we all enjoy.

We have those too of course. The Hondas I was speaking of is the civics with the fart can muffler and the backfire chip.
