Onex Tank-Strap Corrosion

Postby Don_P » Tue Mar 04, 2014 2:52 am

Don't know if anyone else as seen this problem, but fellow Onex builders might take note. While fitting the fuel tank into my Onex (0095), I noticed a few small blisters on the coated surface of the tank straps. I checked this out by removing some of the coating with a wire wheel. Turns out, the surface blisters were just the tip of the iceberg. Much of the surface area under the coating had filiform corrosion, I found this on all four strap pieces. Here are some pictures of one of the blistered areas and the surface below after the coating was removed. I'm not sure if the straps were originally painted or powder coated, but whatever the process was, it was done improperly on all the tank straps in my kit. Since discovering this problem, I've gotten rid of the coating down to bare metal and will prime and re-paint.
