Making Videos

Postby WesRagle » Thu Jun 13, 2024 11:02 pm

Hi Guys,

It's been suggested that I make a video to help explain the workings of the EFI project I'm working on. I've never made a video and I don't have a camera. My daughter does have a camera that she isn't using and agreed to drop it off and let me use it.

Soon, I hope, I will tear down the bread board in favor of a panel appropriate for testing the prototype. I would like to make video clip of the bread board in action before it's torn down.

I'm assuming that If I "film" some clips I'll be able to study the editing process later as I try to splice the clips together in some logical sequence.

Question: Is there anything I need to know up front before filming the clips? Is there a preferred format for the clips that will make editing easier later? I assume the video will be posted to YouTube.

I just don't want to get to the end and have a bunch of stuff I can't use. Any advice appreciated.

Thanks,

Wes

My videos aren't great at all but they kinda get the point across. I've done videos with a single camera and others with multiple cameras, all different, and even adding in some still shots while mixing and/or overdubbing the audio.

I like simple & free. So lately I've used a product called Openshot: https://www.openshot.org/

Here's a video I did a few weeks ago about a recent Young Eagles flight using Openshot and downloaded video from several camera (mostly Andriod & iPhone type cameras) along with a few still photos inserted:

Dunno if this helps ...

A) Decide if you are going to shoot portrait or landscape and be consistent.
A.1,) Don't start shooting and then change orientation.

B) Roll, give yourself 5 seconds to settle and then action. Same on cut. The extra footage at both ends will make edits and fades easier.

C.) Write a script.. Doesn't have to be exhaustive, but you should at least have an outline of what you want to say and what the shots are to get the point across.

D.) Have fun...

For simple one camera videos, I use my android phone and the YouCut Pro app. Amazing what a cell phone can do. Even without a SIM or other account they are worth having in your tool box.

So how do you guys record/add commentary? Can commentary be mixed with the recorded sound of the clip?

I'm clueless.

Same with kdenlive. Free and you can add another audio track. Lots of options, they are probably all decent.
