Is the canopy supposed to be removeable?

I'm trying to decide how far I should get on my canopy install before I attach the wings, but once I rivet the canopy hinge on, I will be unable to remove the pin should I decide to remove the canopy. Is this typical?

If the hinge location is as per plans, should be able to remove it. Just bow the hinge just enough to clear the turtledeck. Obviously need to have the canopy open.

Good to know. I think I might need to remove a knuckle from the hinge for the pin to clear the turtledeck.

Here is a photo of mine with the pin hanging out past turtledeck. Whilst my canopy construction doesn't totally follow the plans. I thought the location of the bottom hinge half was where specified.

The rear couple of hinge loops, do float. I wasn't prepared to drill through the fuse splice plates, nor did I think it was necessary. If the last couple of loops are cut out I think it would just add to the air leaks.

After over 3 years of flying now, I'm happy I installed the strut Frank. It stops the canopy from blowing closed. Only problem I had was I had to install a stopper to stop it distorting the frame with the canopy closed.

I’m planning to do the same thing, following your (and Adrian Clout’s) example I ordered the following stuff from McMaster:

1 9416K15 Gas Spring with Threaded Ends, 15 Force, 10.71" Extended Length, 3.94" Stroke
2 9416K86 10 mm Nylon Ball Socket for M6 Thread Gas Spring with Threaded Ends
2 9512K98 Ball Mounting Hardware, 303 Stainless Steel 10 mm Ball Stud, 5/16"-18 Thread Length

I’ve also been collecting whatever pictures of yours and Adrian’s installations :-)
