Additional Parts and Pieces

Good morning all

Recently had to order some AN960 washers from Spruce in order to hide the unthreaded bolt shank, and be able to properly torque the bolt/nut.

Just curious if there are any suggestion of additional parts and pieces that I may need, and/or want? I would rather not stop assembly while I wait for onsie twosie orders.

All you ever need is more. Tricky problem. Whenever I find I'm short a bolt/washer/nut/whatever, I buy several of the size plus some above and below. I advise making a friend at Sonex, like Mark, who can smuggle you the odd hardware item now and then. My EAA Chapter has a hardware collection and it's a blessing. Otherwise Aircraft Spruce is your friend and for small orders they ship UPS and it's cheap.

I asked Sonex about getting individual pieces of hardware. Apparently it comes to them prepackaged, and pieces aren't available. So it's order as I go...

I often found that the length of bolt called for in Sonex plans was a hair too long and it was better to use the next shorter bolt than to add extra washers. (the extra weight adds up). I bought a basic bolt kit with a few of each of the most common sizes. it came in very handy and saved time waiting for additional parts. 10 years later, still use the remains of that.,for odd projects.

I assumed, probably incorrectly, that the next size shorter bolt would have too many threads. I was told that threads should not be "buried" in the material. So I ordered washers. I may now order bolts.

Yes, there should not be any threads buried in the parts being bolted together. Additionally, you should not use more than 3 washers to take up the slack. However, the best course is to use a bolt where the shank just shows past the work surface and can be covered by only one washer.

Every kit I ever built, (6), had quite a number of incorrect bolt callouts so I just use a bolt that fits the above criteria and it all works out.
