RPM sensors

Postby Nick » Thu Oct 05, 2023 6:30 pm

I have a MGL MX1 IEFIS. Can anyone explain how to get two RPM readings When doing the Mag Checks. I have one Electronic Mag and One of the original Jabiru 3300 came with. If I turn off the electronic Mag I lose the RPM so can't see any drop. I do have a new sensor on the tab pickup for RPM but not sure where to connect the wires? I was thinking I could tie it in with the RPM wire from the Electronic Mag. What has everyone else done. Thanks

I had an MX1 for awhile, until I got tired of waiting for them to fix their software. But I know exactly what you are asking and there is an easy solution - not sure if I remember it all. Basically you connect your RPM sources to RPM1 & RPM2. Then the MX1 will read the higher of the two. So when one drops out the other is the one being read. I don't recall what kind of setting (if any) need to be made in the setup.

So my MX1 was replaced with a Xtreme EMS which does not have this (above) feature. In order to see the two RPMs I had to configure it to show two RPM gauges. It's a bit of a compromise.

If you have the small two wire Jabiru sender with a 1/4" thread? Black wire to ground, and red wire to one of the 2 rpm terminals on the RDAC. Will then need to select the correct dip switches and gain on the RDAC. If this is the sensor you have I can have a look at what I have selected on the RDAC. Also need to set up pulses per rpm on the display.
Once set up this tacho input works really well..

Steve you are absolutely right. I am going to use one source the Jabiru sender and not worry about the Mag or EI because the sender will always send RPM. Don't know why I didn't think of it to begin with. Thanks to everyone for the Ideas. Nick
