I had an MX1 for awhile, until I got tired of waiting for them to fix their software. But I know exactly what you are asking and there is an easy solution - not sure if I remember it all. Basically you connect your RPM sources to RPM1 & RPM2. Then the MX1 will read the higher of the two. So when one drops out the other is the one being read. I don't recall what kind of setting (if any) need to be made in the setup.
So my MX1 was replaced with a Xtreme EMS which does not have this (above) feature. In order to see the two RPMs I had to configure it to show two RPM gauges. It's a bit of a compromise.
