Safety wire/retention

A repository of lessons learned from builders with technical guidance and best practices. This is a project of the Sonex Builders and Pilots Foundation.
Forum rules
Lessons-learned submissions follow a standardized format designed to identify the issue, draw out the relevant factors and present useful guidance to others facing a similar situation. The submitter answers the following 5 questions:

1) What went wrong (or right), and why?
2) What were the shortcomings, and why did they exist?
3) What actions were taken to fix the problem?
4) What preventive actions should be taken into account for future efforts?
5) What overall recommendations should be made for future projects?

The length of the write-up and amount of detail presented are left up to each individual. Some lessons learned can be perfectly conveyed in a few simple sentences, while others will require much more. The goal is to be as clear and succinct as possible, not to generate literary masterpieces!

All posts submitted to this forum are held in a review queue for approval by a moderator. Information in the posts will be reviewed, vetted, and modified as needed before going public. Additionally, any replies that are submitted would also be reviewed to ensure they add value and remain on topic. This will avoid normal threat drift of general discussions.

Safety wire/retention

I have had a bunch of stuff come loose during my 40 hours. Here is a list/pictures of things I have added some safety wire or other retention stuff to.

Valve cover bolts:

My landing gear fairing pins were coming out. I made this little retainer out of a thick piece, a thin piece, and a nutplate.

Air filter!

I ended up changing to a different air filter, and pictures and descriptions of that setup are shown in the thread linked below. If you are counting on a hose clamp to keep it in place you are likely to be disappointed. My new air filter has adequate safety wire to keep it from falling off now. Of course you should safety your Aerocarb to the intake as specified in the manual.

Oil cooler bolts - these two just thread into the oil cooler adapter. Maybe I could have done safety wire but I had to grind down the forward bolt for cowl clearance.

I screwed up one of the pictures - the oil cooler bolt picture is another one of the valve cover safety wire. Unfortunately with lessons learned, both original posts and edits have to be approved by a moderator to keep the fluff out of this category, so it's hard to go back and edit. I'll be using the preview button more frequently here.

Here is another safety I added, and was the catalyst for this submission to lessons learned. My inboard wheel pant screws go into nutplates, which provide locking. There is a 10-32 hole tapped in the end of the axle for the outboard wheel pant retention, and I kept losing them. Loctite was tried and that didn't work. So I made a little washer, drilled a little hole near the edge, bent it up, and riveted it on. This gave me a safety wire point for a hex bolt rather than a low-drag phillips screw.
