Nut plates/anchor nuts for inspection panels

Postby dbdevkc » Fri Dec 02, 2022 7:30 pm

Q1)
Building a legacy model and the plans call for sheet metal screws for the inspection plates. I know many have used nutplates/anchor nuts and I am curious what was used. I have some MS21047-08 all metal locking 2-lug nut plates that came with the hardware kit. I assume those are safe to use with the correct screw.

Q2)
My plans detail fabricating the pitot static assembly, mounting it to an 'inspection' plate, then using MS21047-3 nutplates/anchor nuts AN526-832R8 machine screws for mounting the inspection plate. But the MS21047-3 anchor nuts are 10-32 thread, while the AN526-832R8 machine screws are 8-32 thread.

But I have discovered that the plans for the B models, in the plate that holds the Wicks pitot static assembly (which came with my hardware kit), call for AN366F-524A nutplates/anchor nuts. They would seem to be nylon insert locking nutplates, but I cannot find them available anywhere. What did anyone else use when mounting the Wicks pitot static assembly - 10-32 or 8-32 thread anchor nuts and screws?

I used nutplates that that accepted 8-32 screws on my Onex for pitot, LRI, strobes, wheel pants
and cowl fasteners. Only used sheet metal screws on fairings and inspection hole covers which I fabricated out of clear Lexan. Makes preflight inspection easy.

I vote that any of the sizes of MS21047 nutplates are good. I have a lot of #6 and #8 nutplates.

If you are mounting your pitot probe to an inspection cover, no reason why you can't use bolts and nuts. On my Waiex I went with a tail mounted pitot like Kip's.

I used the K series nut plates from Aircraft Spruce for inspection plates etc...ie K1000--08. They also have angle versions, mini versions, countersink versions....and the plastic locknut style.

I also started using these. The thing about nutplates, there are many different variations and they are all good. Things to consider is will they fit where I need them, do I like them, and cost.

You can use a dimple die on the K1000 series rivet holes and rivet them directly to a thin sheet like an inspection cover.

The pitot static probe assembly is mounted to the inspection using machine screws and nylocks, but the plate itself is where they have the AN366F-524A anchor nuts specified. Those have a nylock insert, unlike most of the other anchor nuts with are all metal locking and, I have been unable to source that size.

I guess I'll go with an all metal locking anchor nut like a MS21047-08 with an 8-32 thread.

Thanks.
