25 or 50 hour oil and filter change

Postby JohnBlackstone » Fri Jul 08, 2022 2:50 pm

The Jabiru 3300 installation and maintenance manual calls for change of oil filter after initial 25 hours (p. 15, para. 13, and Section 5.3).

The next mention of oil filter change is paragraph 6.1 Lubrication System: change oil and filter at 100 hour inspection.

Common practice for aircraft engines is to change oil at 25 hour intervals if you have only a screen, and at 50 hour intervals if you have a filter. I have been advised to change oil and filter every 25 hours.

Where is this written in the Jabiru manual?

Of course I realize that cutting open and examining the filter and oil analysis are best practices, and results could call for more frequent changes.

Thoughts please.

can't say I know for sure about the oil change regimen from written forms. However I change my oil and filter at 25 hrs and adjust my valves at the same time (gen 1). less than 4 qts is pretty inexpensive in my mind and it is fairly dark by then anyway. I burn almost exclusively mo gas. I fly about 70-80 hrs a yr between 2 planes (50ish on the sonex). I think you could go longer than 25 if you want and not hurt anything if you want to, but I personally would not go 50hrs just seeing how dark my oil is at 25. Also I am in the engine for the valve work anyway so why not. A lot depends on how often you fly.

The maintenance manual says 25hr interval for oil and filter. Page 91 under 25 hr inspection. PDFs of the latest manuals are all on the Jabiru website, under the Support tab./ manuals.

Can anyone recommend a lab for oil analysis? I'm also curious if builders are sending oil only for analysis or oil & filter.

Blackstone. They are beginning to get an (all be it small) stable of AeroVees in their database - so in addition to your averages - they can offer you averages compared to "fleet" (all AeroVees).

They are EXTREMELY responsive to questions or any notes you put in with your sample.
