Attention Electronics Wizards;

I seek your wise council.

I have a Dynon SkyView display in my new Sonex - It has come to my notice that the addition of a GPS receiver will make significant improvements to its utility.

Dynon make two GPS receivers; the SV-GPS-250 and the SV-GPS-2020.

It seems to me (the epitome of technological ignorance) that the 250 is likely to do all that I may want, for now and at 1/3 the price of the 2020 appeal to my short arm/deep pocket principals.

However the 2020 seems to have features that are pretty much required by Uncle Sam. As Australia often follows the direction set by Sam I wonder if I should dig deep and purchase the more capable unit?

IMO the only question would be is Australia planning to implement and/or require ADS-B? If not looks like the SV-SPS-250 would be sufficient.

Choosing the right GPS: US customers that are planning to equip their aircraft for compliance with the FAA's 2020 ADS-B Out mandate should install an SV-GPS-2020 as their primary GPS. US customers that use an SV-GPS-2020 can utilize a second SV-GPS-250 as a position source backup. At this time, Dynon does not make any claims about the SV-GPS-2020's applicability or useabillity outside of the US to satisfy ADS-B Out or other requirements. Therefore, non-US customers will generally equip with the SV-GPS-250.

Follow up - I will be mounting my GPS receiver on the glair shield. It will be painted matt black to minimise visual distraction & fit in with rest of paint job. Dynon have stated that any paint that will stick to the plastic housing is okay to use.

Just don't paint the antenna. Painting ANY antenna is not recommended.

I have heard that covering with vinyl is a better alternative to painting. You can get sample sized pieces for very little money from metro styling:

I agree with Graeme that painting GPS antennas is not a good idea although some have gotten away with it. My GPS antenna (for the EchoUAT) is white so I mounted it on the white turtle deck. Mounting on the glare shield had a couple of concerns as to how much heat it would get but mostly about possible interference with other equipment (iFly GPS, Comm Radio, EZ Autopilot). I tend to end up with "stuff" stacked on the glare shield during cross country flights so I try to keep that area clean.

At the end of the day I don't believe it makes a lot of difference but I wanted a great GPS signal as mine is tied to my ADS-B out (required) and my ADS-B in (traffic & weather) that is displayed on my iFly.

there are a couple new units on ebay, $215, and $190. gps-250.
i have a dynon set up , flying, with gps250, then had to upgrade to the gps -2020
to be compliant with the faa cert requirements. i believe it is the SIL level.source integrety level.
accuracy. the faa was changing some requirements as people started selling hardware/software.
so dynon came out with the gps 2020 to meet the requirements.
navworx got caught up in this, tried to cheat, got caught, and suffered their demise.
dont know of the requirements in OZ.
or what they will require in the future.
basically the atc system will be adsb display only, with no ground based radar systems.
so accuracy is a must, for aircraft taxiing on the ground to aircraft separation in the air.
