Electric Xenos-B Electric Quick Build

Electric Xenos-B Electric Quick Build

Postby taildragger » Wed Aug 04, 2021 6:42 am

I am getting a detailed quote including freight. A rough quote $42K was given at the Airventure 2021 Sonex booth. Sonex has a 7 month backlog on the quick build kit. A Zero motorcycle motor will be used with the prototype motor and battery mount. Questions:

Any advice?
Would it be better to buy a completed Xenos-B, an incomplete Xenos-B or other brand motorglider and retrofit the electric motor?

Its almost always less expensive to buy a second hand airplane. Xenos for sale don't come up often but they are out there. I seem to remember seeing flying ones for $30. Best of luck and keep us posted. These projects are always exciting to follow.

I lot has changed since 2009. The $31.7K included the engine and basic avionics.

Electric Xenos-B Electric Quick Build

Postby Gmoney » Wed Aug 04, 2021 4:02 pm

Thinking out loud. Quality and completeness of a new Sonex kit is worth the money. As far as the wait goes, why not split the XB portion and build the tail and wings while you wait for the XB fuse or vice verse?

As far as second hand goes... I just picked up a Moni kit two weeks ago for an amazing price. May know where a Legacy “scratch build” is sitting. It’s out there.

Here's a photo similar to my new 12x24 ft garage-workshop for the build. It will have a 12 ft workbench, electricity and climate control. It is being built by Stoltzfus Structures and delivered on-site by Feb, 2022, just in time for the full quick build kit arrival.

Any suggestions for types of larger fixed tooling?
E.g. vise, grinder, belt sander, etc...

I could not imagine building my Xenos without my vertical bandsaw, belt sander & Scotchbrite wheel on the bench grinder. Mine only took 4500+ hrs to build with these timesaving tools!

4500 hours? Wow!
How many hours would it take for a quick build?

Sonex estimates around 1200 hours for the XENOS non quick build kit. It took me 1200 hours to build my XENOS (non quick build). Your mileage may vary.

My Xenos-B Quick Build log shows 1,126 hours to date. See https://eaabuilderslog.org/?blprojreports&proj=7ZEd3Y0x4&rep=A
