Oil Pump Removal

I bought a new oil pump for the Top Mount Cooler from Sonex. I tried to remove the original one but it doesn't have the two flow ports on opposite sides to use the T puller. Anyone have any suggestions on how to remove it? Its a new build and has never been run.

I just did a removal. It came out suprisingly easy for me. I grabbed it by hand and just wiggled while pulling. Same as you, engine with almost no time.

Are you upgrading to a turbo?

I've tried everything and it won't budge. I even grabbed both sides with some vise grips and tried pulling. I've tried getting a small screwdriver under an edge. Nope. All the online stuff shows using the T handle puller with the two internal opposite ports. There has to be trick to this.

I got this project from a dear friend that had medical issues a few years ago and gave up. He was a career A&P and built the engine about first in the project. Its been sitting assembled for several years. Its a Onex with the top mounted oil cooler. I'm not sure why he used this pump. Maybe he was just going to put a loop on it. It has nikasil cylinders so no Turbo for now.

It appears that an awful lot of Permatex Aviation Sealant #3 was used on that pump. (I hate that stuff and don't use it anymore). Is it possible that the builder used so much as to end up gluing the pump in?

If you haven't already done this you could place a drift pin against various spots around the sides of the pump and tap the drift pin with a plastic mallet to try to break the pump loose. I wouldn't be afraid to get aggressive as you wont need the pump again.

I have never seen one that just didn't simply come out when needed. The only thing you need to guard against is marring the sealing surface of the block.

Lou is rigt about not marring the mating surface. Tom WIlson's book says that there might be enough lip to be able to pull up from there.

If you are going to crack the case open, then it might be okay to leave the part in place as you pull the halves apart.

I didn't plan on breaking the case. I just want the flow thru pump for the top oil cooler. Kerry mentioned trying to get it to turn. I don't remember whats under there. The boss that surrounds the drive gear is pretty big and I don't know what clearance is behind the pump. Does anyone know how much it will turn? Even a few degrees might be enough to break it loose.

He liked Permatex. It was all over the bottom plate too.

Thanks for the photo. It gave me the confidence to grab it with a BIG pipe wrench. I got it to turn! The Permatex broke loose. It was still tight but at least it moved. I only moved it a few degrees back and forth a few times but it was REALLY hard. I called in a 'phone a friend' and he came over with a slide hammer. We were able to get one of the small hooks in. Working one side at a time, it slowly started to give. After about 10 minutes and a hundred wacks, it came out!

Don't use Permatex! I can see it oozing out of those intakes too. I'll get that at the first valve adjust. Thank you everyone for the replies and inspiration.
