...increase the lower cowl exit area...

It alwasy seems to help but pilots are SO hesitant to do it.

Good job Lou :)

I have about 600 hours in Sonex's between this one and my last with a 3300. I have flown them over to 13,000 ft, mostly in the desert, but also to LA and San Diego where it is much more humid. I have never had an icing problem with the Aeroinjector. For the type of flying that I do and the geographical area in which I fly, I am just not too concerned with carb ice so will not be doing anything to inhibit a condition that I don't have.

I don't think Sonex has had an icing incident that they have shared with anyone even though they are in cold, damp, gray, miserable, 3.2 beer, nothing to do, bad pizza, bad bagel Wisconsin! Good cheese though!

Yeah fair enough! I guess just adding more exits is way simpler than anything else.

Also 3.2 beer is definitely not a thing in Wisconsin ;)

And yet an O-200 can sniff out a few molecules of moisture, from miles away, on a clear sunny day, and turn it into ice...

You have got that right. When I was flying the O-200 carb ice was just a few degrees or per cent humidity away. I've experienced it during taxi for take off and at the base of clouds at dew point temp. Carb heat was the only solution. Used 100% during landing. Without a venturi, and a butterfly valve in the middle, the AeroInjector cannot lower the air temp and there is no place to accumulate ice except on the side walls of the warm intake manifold. Not a problem. A friend just took delivery of a brand new Vashon with an O-200. All glass panel that also includes the carb temp. April in Central Illinois (clear, temp 59 degrees), He is seeing temps of 32 degrees in the carb which is normally a Marvel Schebler on that engine.

Locally we have a J3 Cub with a Continental A65 (smaller horsepower O-200) that managed to get a field approval for an AeroInjector. Because....... Less prone to carb ice than the Marvel Schebler

Were you having problems with the engine quitting on final, after landing, or on taxi back from a flight? How is this working for you?

I just purchased a Waiex and flew it 1200 miles. On every landing the engine quit. Aerovee turbo.

My mechanic thinks the air out of the turbo is too hot thus resulting in an overly rich mixture on landing. I did try leaning on a few landings and it did seem like the engine would quit at a lower rpm, around 1400 versus 1600 previously. The CHTs are always in the green. Oil temp is around 170F. Engine would restart though I had to use a lot of throttle and ride the brakes. On a few occasions though it refused to restart after landing until after it sat a bit, 20 min or more.

My mechanic is suggesting putting in a couple of small intercoolers. Any thoughts on this? I live in Fl so it is hot here a lot. Not even sure I can find ones small enough and then how will this affect the airflow over the cylinders? CHTs push 400F on takeoff and sit around 380F in cruise.

Surprised more folks aren’t having this issue. Until I can resolve this the wife is staying on the ground.
