I'm going to print up some post lights and may also try to gut a Harbor Freight tactical flashlight to make a homebrew light similar to the lights in the antiques I used to fly. Would like to hear more interior lighting ideas.
The red LED headlamp worked great. Not sure it would be good for the traffic scan though.
I used an LED light strip like this:

https://www.steinair.com/product/led-light-dimmer/I think you could probably make a dimmer like that yourself for cheaper but I just wanted a plug and play thing. Anyway I put the light strip on the underside of the glareshield. It looks like this, although much less bright than what this photo makes it appear. I was thinking about adding more in the foot well or behind my head for ambient light but I think this is plenty of light. My assistant likes it, anyway.
If you don't have an overhanging edge on your glareshield like that maybe you could run a strip along the bottom side of the panel, or even on the back of the panel right at the bottom edge? That would probably give some nice ambient lighting but it wouldn't light up all your switches and stuff so I'm not sure how useful that would be...
