Has anyone considered putting a Corvair on the Onex? I know it will probably push it out of LSA compliance due to speed, but that could be handled like the Carbon Cub did.

I'm certainly no expert, but I would think a Corvair in a Onex may be a little too heavy for that airframe. You're talking about adding another 30-40 lbs right on the nose.

On the other hand, it sure would be fast!! :mrgreen:

I'm really starting to think the Onex might be my next project unless the Panther really progresses and starts selling complete kits.

I think the Onex has a bit of a tail heavy issue anyways so going lighter than an Aerovee brings issues.

Look at the Jab2200 one. The builder had to extend the engine mount forward to get the CG right. It created a really long nose on it.
The D-Motor would have the same problem.

But I need more than 80HP up here.

The turbo Aerovee will do it if it becomes available, but that comes in close to the weight of the Viking or Corvair.

Just thinking out of the box, but one way to deal with the heavier engine would be to build a fuel tank behind the seat, or wet wing, and use a header tank. Eliminate the need for the fuel fill through the windshield too.

I got to sit in the Panther at Airventure. Like you say, very innovative and stylish. Got to meet Dan and Tony Spicer too. Even got a folding wing demo.
My only concern with them is they are a startup company with a monumental task ahead of them. I really hope they are able to pull it off. But I would hate to be caught with a partially built kit and no support because of something out of my control. Maybe by the time I'm ready to pull the trigger they will have full kits out.

Right now, I'm leaning towards the Onex with hopes the turbo will be ready when I need it.

If you set the GW at the recommended 1100 lbs your RoC will be very satisfactory. At 1150 my Sonex climbs about like a fully loaded C-150. At 1200 things start to get a bit sticky.

Jeremy hit on some rate of climb numbers in his webinar last night. He thinks 400-500 fpm is a good average for the Sonex. That fits my observations too. On a good cool day you can do better than 500 fpm.

That's what I was getting too. Waiex, AeroVee, 950 lbs (just me and full fuel) on a cool day averages around 900 feet per minute. At gross of 1100 lbs that's 400-500 feet per minute, and I still find the most interesting part is how much warmer the engine runs at higher weights. Once leveled off in cruise there's minimal difference in airspeed and engine temps.
