new transponder

Went for my first xponder certification and found out the Kt76 is good for nothing but a boat anchor. Looking for suggestions for a reasonably priced one that people are happy with. Does not need to be adsb-out. I have a Dynon Skyview if that helps.

I haven’t flown with it yet but I’ve been happy with the ARTEX ELT 345 I got. It’s easy to install, can take GPS input from an MGL or Dynon (to broadcast accurate location to Satellites in the event of activation), and is only ~$600.

Seeing that you have a skyview and do NOT need ADS-B out, have you looked for a used Dynon SV-XPNDR-262? I have the SV-XPNDR-261 with my skyview for ads-b out and the integration with the skyview is great. The 262 will integrate the same way but doesn’t work with the Dynon ADS-B out solution. Maybe you can get lucky and find someone removing the 262 so they can upgrade to the 261 for ADS-B out and get a good price on it? Even if you do need to buy new, the 262 is less than the 261, and i would put that in with the skyview before spending almost the same amount on a stand alone.

(To speak NWade‘s point about the ELT, the Artex 345 seems to be a great unit, however make sure you special order it in NMEA 0183 4800 baud if you have a skyview and want to feed the skyview gps to the Artex 345. The 345 come standard as aviation protocol 9600 and Dynon currently does not support gps data out in aviation protocol 9600 baud. If you dont order the 345 in 4800 baud you will need to mail it to an authorized distributor to reprogram.)

That's what I'm planning to do, John. I just hate to pull a good working transponder out of my panel and set it on the shelf to rot away. I don't care to go UAT or I'd keep the unit.. Maybe someone else is interested in a Microair T2000 with a TransCal encoder.

I was a very early ADSB adapter with UAT (GDL88 in a Debonair) and it has been flawless. UAT is fine if you do not fly over 18,000' or to other countries. And some UAT installations only require one antenna, on the belly (mine is that way).

Did you use the SP12 output for the 345? I'm not sure how to make that happen.
