Tiny tach with a Jabiru 3300

Postby Sonex1517 » Mon Apr 20, 2020 8:44 am

Good morning Sonexland

I’m curious if anyone has successfully configured a Tiny Tach with a Jabiru 3300. I’m curious what setting was used.

Tiny tach with a Jabiru 3300

Postby caveman371 » Mon Apr 20, 2020 4:46 pm

Robbie,
Mine is set up already in my MGL enigma. Not sure I can help as it was set up prior to my purchase of my project.
I can go into the menu for you if you need

Hi Mike

Thanks! My GRT Mini is already set up so I have that part working. The “Tiny Tach” is a separate little black box that senses RPM directly off the ignition and either I’m stupid (a given) and cannot set it right, or it just doesn’t like the 3300 signal.

Hi Robbie, all,
Just a thought , did you try both tach leads? only one usually provides a good tach pulse.

good luck. Thanks again for everything you do. I still remember the first flightline meeting at oshkosh.

SBPF . if i remember it was you and mike farley and carl orton who first got us going
added: yes and eric seber.

be safe to all

Hi Michael

The Tach reading on my GRT Mini is working perfectly. I use the Tiny Tach up on the instrument panel next to my Lift Reserve Indicator so I can be eyes up and looking ahead on approach. Power and lift....

I may try the other lead. Should be the same. Thanks for that suggestion!

And you’re welcome! It was also Eric Seber that got us going along with Michael Farley and Carl Orton.

Robbie,

The Tiny Tach models that I have used on Rotax 2 strokes had a short wire pigtail lead that was wrapped around one spark plug wire. This wire pigtail sensed the pulse going to the plug and relayed that to the display. Internally, there was a switch or a wire loop "jumper" that was either left intact or removed/snipped. Is your Tiny Tach similar, or designed to connect to something else?

That’s the one, Jeff. It has a red wire and a white wire. White is ground and Red is signal. You wrap it around an ignition lead.

It worked on the AeroVee....

There are settings for number of pulses per revolution, and I have it set per the manual. That’s 60°

Today I re-wrapped the wire and verified the ground.

Once I test fly it I will know if that fixed it.

Same as on the hovercraft. The red wire is wrapped around the plug wire and the white wire is grounded.

Here it is in action. The new carb in the picture above got us another 300 RPM as compared to the video.

It is a great little instrument.

Today I set the tiny tach to 120° and it reads accurately. Just in case anyone else ever runs into this.

Im interested in what tach you bought and how you installed it. My MGL E1 for some reason, the tach readings are erratic and unreliable. If I could add a cheap tiny tach I would. KISS
