Virtual Sonex Fly-In, Join on Zoom!

Postby sonex1374 » Wed Apr 01, 2020 11:37 am

Since we're all practicing social distancing and not getting our regular dose of aviation merriment, we need something to fill the gap. Robbie Culver has organized a virtual Sonex gathering to help us all get our aviation fix and meet a few fellow Sonex builders!

Here are the particulars from Robbie, and we also talk about it on the latest SonexFlight Podcast episode (http://www.sonexflight.com/70).

Who: Everyone!

What: Virtual Sonex gathering using the free "Zoom" video conference app.

When: Saturday, April 4, 2020, 12:00 noon Central Time

Where: Connect online - https://us04web.zoom.us/j/5953922944

-------

A few airspace rules:

    - No talking politics! Anyone who does will get a 5 minute timeout. Save the politics for family reunions!
    - Zoom works best if you mute your microphone unless speaking. If you don’t, ATC may mute it for you. You will see a screen notification if that happens.
    - Best results when using Zoom on a tablet or computer, but a smartphone also works (with just a bit less flexibility when connecting to the meeting).
    - Video sharing is encouraged since we haven’t all met in person.
    - If you are able to or allowed to, try attending in your hangar with your airplane or project.
    - To participate you must download the Zoom app (it's free!). Make an account. If possible, try it out ahead of time.
    - The virtual fly in is 40 minutes long. There will be a brief introduction, followed by a quick trip around the pattern by the hosts. Robbie will be air traffic control for participants and go down the list to give everyone a chance to share.

Download Zoom here: https://zoom.us/download
Meeting ID: 595 392 2944

Suggestions for discussion:

    - Give us a brief description of your Sonex/Waiex/Onex/Xenos.
    - Show us your home base or hangar.
    - Tell/show us what you’re working on in the shop.
    - Any big adventures planned once things get back to normal?
    - Have you been able to fly lately?
    - Be creative, and let's get to know each other!

I think this will be a fun event, and I hope to see you all there!

This is great chance to put faces and names together! My EAA chapter hosted a Zoom meeting last evening, and it was a blast. I’ve also been on two recent virtual fly ins with aviation friends from the US, Canada, and Europe.

Please join us and let’s share some fellowship of flight in these trying times.

Quick update. I just got an email from Zoom

“Going forward, your previously scheduled meetings (including those scheduled via your Personal Meeting ID) will have passwords enabled. If your attendees are joining via a meeting link, there will be no change to their joining experience. For attendees who join meetings by manually entering a Meeting ID, they will need to enter a password to access the meeting.”

Since a password is required it will be the name of the aircraft that titles this forum - the original model, not the Y or the One. The first letter will be capitalized. (If you aren’t sure, think about it a second)

PM me if that does not make sense.

My 2 cents on FUTURE LOGISTICS

- At the start, MUTE EVERYONE and moderator teaches people how to self unmute
- Make INTROS VOLUNTARY, for people who want to be seen, want to say hello, therefore limit to 15 mins
- Have an ONLINE POLL on weekly topics the week before next fly-in
- Pick 2-3 topics for the week, and 2-3 people to start each topic, then open to all

And in the end, if you don't change anything, I will still be there ;-)

THANKS!!!!

Thanks so much for suggesting this, making it happen, and corralling the herd!

The ideas for a topic poll is a great one, too.

Let me know if I can help - as an IT guy I'm always happy to pitch in on the tech/organizing side. :-)

Take care,

First off, THANK YOU to everyone who joined us! That was a great way to get together. At one point we had 45 participants!

Peter Anson - hats off to you for getting up at 3 am to join us.

For a first try, my feeble efforts at playing ATC were....okay. We can do better. We will step back, plan, and do this again soon.

Interesting in some of the different viewpoints, on this get together and the second one I attended. Whether or not to fly is clearly an intensely personal and mildly controversial subject, based on the second virtual fly in that I attended today. (A more international audience with a completely different view)

More to follow, but thank you again for joining and for your excellent suggestions.

Can you post a link to the video of the meeting? Or is that a paid-zoom only thing.

For sure he did! It had to be overwhelming with the turnout we had and the rush for time.

I used the "raise your hand" feature once that I think ended up more as a distraction, but in the future it may be a way to help moderate the folks who want to talk. Mute-control is super important to keep the audio (and video) from getting jumbled, though Robbie did a great job managing it regardless.
