HELP! Length of lower cowl hinges for legacy horizontal cowl

Postby N418SX » Sat Feb 01, 2020 11:28 am

Can anyone direct me to the plans page that has the length of lower cowl hinges for legacy horizontal cowl? I’m sure it’s there, but I’m going blind.

I don't know exact numbers, and I don't think it's all that important that they are exact. On the bottom end they are defined by your cowl air exit, which has specs in the plans but many builders (myself included) have made bigger cutouts for more cooling airflow. The lower horizontal pins are as long as they need to be to fasten from the edge of the cutout to the outer corners of the firewall.

As for the long center pin, again there is some variance depending on the size of the cowl air exit. Additionally, some builders (myself included) made the center pin shorter and added some tabs to the cowling to fasten the cowling halves together with southcos just beneath the prop hub, mainly to make pin insertion easier by avoiding the sharper bend in the cowling as it tucks up under the prop hub.

This post on my blog has some pictures of my hinge installation. http://www.rynoth.com/wordpress/waiex/2 ... d-cutouts/

Jeff Shultz also has a great video on his cowling, and for the most part I followed what he did. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDlpl5D755M

Edit: My response was for the legacy stock vertically-split cowl, probably not helpful for a horizontally-split cowl.

My horizontal cowl came with it's own drawing; SNX-P17. Those dimensions are on it. The problem is they don't show a cooling air cut-out on that print, so the hinges will be too long. They really dropped the ball on that print.

I used the dimension shown on the vertical cowl print (WIX-P04). That was 7 1/2in.

P04-08 for the firewall. 12.5".
P04-06 for the cowl. 7.5" like Randy says. This is for the Aerovee.

The cooling exit location(s) and size are dictated by the engine choice, which in turn drives the location of the exhaust pipe location. On an AeroVee installation, the AeroVee assembly manual details the cowl exit location. For a Jabiru, the Sonex Jabiru installation instructions detail this.

Seems odd, don't you think, they show all engine installations in the information box, but they only show the lower cowl attachment for the Jabiru on the horizontal cowl supplemental print (P-17).

If you didn't have the vertical split print (P-04) there would be no information as to where to begin with the cowl opening for the VW.
