Cabin Heat for Aerovee

I used 2 Aircraft Spruce heat muffs in series..... worked great. You are right about the 1.5" diameter so I just used a couple 'wraps' of DEI exhaust wrap to make up the difference in diameters. It actually does two things: takes up the space between muff and exhaust header and prevents wear.
And agree 100% with Jeff, installing boots on aileron pushrods helps immensely...

I called Dave at custom Welding Products in Las Vegas. He makes a line of heat muffs that he markets through Aircraft Spruce. The aerovee exhaust pipes are aviation non-standard so I asked if he could make up a muff for the turbo on my Waiex B. Sure enough, it was in the mailbox a week later.

I measured today, and it looks like 8" is the max length that will fit on the #4 exhaust pipe. Is that the length you have?

On the A/C Spruce web site I don't see any way to ask for the custom 1-3/8" diameter end caps. They only show the smallest openings at 1.5". How did you get the right diameter?

I also spoke to Dave at custom Welding. He told me to email him when I ordered the exhaust muffs and tell him: when I ordered, who I ordered from, and the exact diameter and length needed. He said he'd match up my name with the order he gets from ACS to make sure I get what I need.

I'm currently considering installing those heat muffs, but if you are going to install them I'll wait and get your opinion on their effectiveness first. I know you've try other versions in the past so your observations will be highly respected.

I measured the CWP heat muff that I installed on the #4 exhaust pipe. It is exactly 7 3/4 inches long and the endcaps are sized exactly for the Sonex exhaust pipe. ( I sent the diameter of the pipe to CWP with the order and he cut them to fit.)

If I made the heat muff any longer it would have come into contact with one of the pushrod tubes on #4. However, I installed spring-loaded 2 piece tubes at about 12 hours. If you have the standard tubes a slightly longer heat muff may not have the same clearance issue.

In any case, I get great heat from this thing. It is the same heat muff I installed on my RV-8 but that was sized for the IO-360 and 4 into 1 exhaust.

BTW, I ran the spring loaded tubes for a while, but they leaked more than the standard pushrod tubes, at least for me, so I put the stock ones back on.
