are you wrapping the pipe with some spring?

Hi Michael,

Yea, I've poked around a good bit. I'm sure Van's offerings are tilted toward their airbox, Lycoming engines, and Vetterman exhaust.

I do need to do something to maximize heat transfer from the pipe to the induction air. A spring seems like a good idea. Seems like it would swirl the air as it passes through the muff giving it more opportunity to grab some heat (as well as increasing effective surface area of course).

There are a lot of VWs flying around out there. So, I was hoping that someone who has been down this path could offer up a part number. That way I could be lazy, just pull out the credit card, and go work on something else while waiting on the "big brown truck".

I intend to have the pipes ceramic coated. So, I need to get this behind me so I can mask the area that needs to *not* be coated and send the pipes out.

Carb Heat Muff

Hey Gord,

The Turbo Heat Muff is a nice piece but ... I won't be flowing air while carb heat is not in use so I really want to use stainless for this application. In the interest of progress I decided to just splice the old muff back together.

It ain't purdy but I think it'll work just fine.

On another topic: I need to get some control cables on order. I really like the way you did your throttle cable. I'll shoot you an email.

One more topic. I know most of you guys are smarter than I am and would never pick up a die grinder or a dremel tool without eye protection. I also know you don't need a lecture from me. But, for the second time in a month I managed to get something in my eye. The last time was while I was cutting the canopy. I managed to get a piece of acrylic in my eye. That netted me two trips to the eye doctor and 10 days loss of the use of my right eye. I had on aviator style eye glasses, but that just isn't good enough. This time I tried not to even blink, went straight to the shower and flooded my eye with water followed by a shot of left over antibiotic/steroid lace eye drops. I hope I nipped it in the bud. Moral of the story, wear eye protection when appropriate.

Hi Guys,

A slow day today. Just plotting a course forward. While thinking about carb heat and how to measure the temperature rise, I thought of an old prototype gauge I have. The prototype was used for software development. I rescued it from the trash over 20 years ago. I re-rescued it from the scrap pile today. I blew all the aluminum chips off of it and got it a new battery. It measures the output of a type K T/C in degrees C. It was gratifying to see it was still pretty much in cal after all these years.

This question may have been answered already, if so I apologize. Do you fly in a country that requires carb heat even with carburetors that don't need it?

Hi Michael,

No, I live in the USA. However, I intend to try using a Zenith carb and see how that works for me. Some would call it "an old fashion tractor carb":-) It certainly does need carb heat.
