case bolts leaking oil!!!

Postby Johns » Tue Jul 09, 2019 2:39 pm

This is on a 2300 motor. There seems to be a good amount of oil leaking from the lower nuts on the case, just forward of #1 and # 2 cylinders, only at higher rpms. The ones you can't get to without removing the cylinders. Have searched and found nothing about this. Have resealed said cylinders so I don't think it's from there. Just wondering if anyone else ran into this. Am ready to remove cylinders again and put sealer on those nuts. Thoughts?

The large M12 studs? Those are supposed to have O-rings on them when the case halves go together. Any chance you're missing those O-rings?

Edit: found this pic that points them out:

Those are the ones! I didn't build this motor so I am guessing they are there. The oil is coming out of where the nuts screw on the outside of the case.

Out of all the places our Aerovee leaks oil, it has never leaked there. When I reassembled it after our rebuild, I did put sealer on those washers and nuts, but even before it didn't leak. I'm not sure how effective the sealer would be since you'd also have to get the thread sealed, I did it since it couldn't hurt. But if you have a large oil leak my bet is the O-rings are bad or missing.

Did it always leak or did it start at some point?

It just started recently. I guess I will try sealing the threads and nuts. If that doesn't work looks like I'll have to take it apart.
