Question: How do I leak test it?

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Wes hook up a regulated air compressor to no more than 5lbs. of pressure after sealing all openings. Go around all fittings and seams with a spray bottle of windex while looking for small bubbles to form.

Hey Billy,

Sorry for being dense, but how do I hook the fuel tank to a compressed air source?

Thanks,

Wes

3/8” male air hose fitting... put cap on tank and put pipe plugs in all other holes. The hose fitting screws in the same place the fuel shut off valve goes.

I think the 3/8” male hose fitting is the same as on probably your air rivet gun. Just use that.

Hey Guys,

Well, the fittings for my air tools did *not* fit the fuel valve port in the tank.

However, my bride of 42 years agreed to go on a quest. She found a fitting I could use.

Image

I turned the regulator down on my air compressor to show 5 P.S.I. Not trusting the very old regulator/gauge to be accurate at that low of a pressure I "filled up" a portable air tank and took a reading with a digital pressure gauge.

Image

Close enough.

I then hooked up the pressure hose and turned the air on. It was a little alarming to watch the flat sides of the tank bulge out. But, do the arithmetic. Five P.S.I. * surface area is a lot of force.

I tried using Windex but it foamed up a bit when it was sprayed. Then I remembered, while my wife was out she picked up some bubbles for my Grandson. Serendipity!

I pored some "bubbles" into a container and used a brush to apply them.

Ne'er ye a Fubble.

So, I feel pretty good about the "fix". I'll get the tools packed up and sent on to Rob within the next couple of days.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Guys,

Here is the current inventory of the Oops fitting install kit:

1) Tool for large fitting.
2) Tool for small fittings.
3) Abrasive material.
4) A step drill bit turned down to 5/8" for the small fittings.
5) A 7/8" step drill if you would like to follow Sonex's instructions and finish the large fitting drill out with a "twist" bit.
6) I'm throwing in the 1" step drill bit I bought for the large fitting drill out as my contribution to the cause.
7) Instructions.

Rob, the kit will be sent out to you tomorrow.

After you are finished with the kit, please coordinate with Jerry and take care of him. Ref. (

).

And guys, please ,when y'all are finished, make sure the kit makes it back to David with the $8 I've included to cover his cost. His address is included on the instruction sheet.

I'll send Rob a PM to make sure he's aware.

Thanks again to everyone for all the help.

Hi Guys,

With the Oops Fittings behind me, I'm back to FWF. On this build I'm going to use the Zenith carb. So, I'm required to implement carb heat. Once implemented I need to determine it's effectiveness. I've been looking at various carb ice curves.

Ex.
Image

It appears to me that if I can devise a system that produces a 50 Fahrenheit Degree temperature rise in induction air temperature, that would always drive me out of possible icing conditions.

Am I interpreting the curve correctly? Has anyone out there built and tested a system? Comments?

Thanks,

Wes

Hi Guys,

OK, I've given it my best shot at implementing carb heat. I built a simple flapper valve on the air box to get carb heat off of a heat muff. I have an old heat muff I cut down years ago for use on a VW pipe but I ended up not needing it.

Image

What I need now is a longer version of the same muff that I can modify for carb heat. Captain Google yielded this:

However, Wicks tells me that they no longer offer the part and that the manufacturer has gone out of business. So, I find myself in need of a long stainless steel heat muff for use on the VW (1-3/8" I think) exhaust pipe.

Question: Does anyone know where I can purchase a stainless steel heat muff for use on the standard AeroConversions stainless steel VW exhaust?

Thanks For Your Time,

Wes
