MGL Enigma and EchoUAT

Postby GraemeSmith » Sat May 25, 2019 7:33 am

New Member buying a built aircraft. Can't seem to find and answer on this on the MGL website and they haven't responded....

Can the MGL Enigma be used as a GPS source for the uAvionix EchoUAT?

Or do I need the larger EchoUAT package with the GPS source?

TIA

Not familiar with MGL, but most EFIS packages are supplied with non-certified GPS, and thus a certified one will need to be added for ADS-B out.

FWIW: the $500 rebates for ADS-B were all taken a week ago.

To the best of my knowledge, the GPS’s built into MGL units are not WAAS certified units and as such, they cannot be used as the official GPS for ADS-B Out. (If I’m wrong someone please correct me)

I believe your options would be to connect EchoUAT to a Garmin GNS series of GPS or similar, or simply pay the extra and get the Echo that comes with the WAAS GPS.

Best of luck!!

Hi Graeme,

None of the MGL EFIS products contain a WAAS enabled GPS. WAAS is required for ADSB. Therefore you will need the EchoUAT with their SkyFYX GPS.

What transponder do you use? That is important because the ADSB will need to follow and use the same squawk code as the transponder. MGL provides documentation on how to connect one of their iEFIS systems to a Sandia transponder. Here are the links: http://kb.mglavionics.com/article/AA-01957/0/Setup-of-the-uAvionix-EchoUAT-ADS-B-with-the-iEFIS-and-iEFIS-Lite.html and http://kb.mglavionics.com/article/AA-01956/0 .

If you don't have a Sandia transponder MGL most likely has a solution for you. However, the Enigma is no longer in production and support for new functionality is less than for the iEFIS & iEFIS lite series. Be patient with their tech support. It sometimes takes a while for them to return emails, but they have always come through for me.

Do you use the data recorded by the Enigma? If not take a look at this program which will allow you to easily see & archive the data: http://jasflyer.com/

Welcome to the forum Graeme!

According to uAvionix at the following link, the answer appears to be no.

Hi Graeme,

I forgot to mention that I installed the uAvionix EchoUAT & SkyFYX on my OneX which is equiped with an Explorer iEFIS and Sandia remote transponder. Installation required around 3 hours and it has worked flawlessly.

9 hours in the tie downs later and the 121.5 ELT is out and the 406 ELT is in (an hour making up the harness the day before on the bench)

and ADS-B Out is in (EchoUAT and SkyFy). Plus a test flight.

Failed for being 300ft off on Baro Alt throughout the flight - but I'm pretty sure that is a transponder calibration issue.

Lost count of the number of times I climbed in and out of the tailcone today. I'm sore!
