Corvair engine mount

Postby Ray1966 » Tue Nov 27, 2018 3:02 pm

Hello, I just wanted to ask if anyone here knows of someone who is or can make a Corvair engine mount for the Waiex B model?

Also does anyone know if the new B model cowl will fit a Corvair engine?

Thank you Ray.

Suggest you talk with William Wynne. He can give you accurate advice on how to proceed, and may make one for you himself.

Hi Ray,
If you have a hard time contacting William Wynne you can also contact Dan Weseman at Sport Performance Aviation. Their website is

I seem to recall Dan saying that he had no plans to develop a B-model mount, but that was a while back. Worth asking again.

Thank you for the replies.
Yes I have checked with SPA With Mrs.Weseman, and she said they did not have any plans to build a Corvair engine mount for the Waiex/Sonex B model aircraft
Mr. Wynn is working with them in parts of their business, so I ASSUME he is not interested in building the engine mount as well.

I guess as much as I dont want to I will look at the Zodiac 650B, because Its a 2 seater and can use the Corvair and has a engine mount available.

Or maybe the Panther. I really would like a 2 seater though to take my Grandson up with me.

Thank you Ray S.

Ray...instead of assuming William won’t help, why don’t you just call him? If you ask for his advice on this you will most likely get good advice.

Good luck with whatever project you decide.

Hi ray,
A little proding may help. Maybe intent to order a complete engine or parts to build up a corvair from them would get their attention. Nice people dan , rachel, and their 2 sons. I had the pleasure of sitting at their table at osh 18 at the thur nite homebuilders dinner at the nature center. I would assume they would need a set of plans to work from. you could build up the cowl from their plans and nosebowl.
Another avenue would be to contact bill clapp at www.azaleaaviation.com
Maybe they can build up a mount for the sonex B’s

good luck!

Yes Sir, I thought about that. I would be buying an engine from them. I also thought about Mr.Clapp. The tail dragger
Waiex B model that was for sale on here and Barnstormers seems to have been sold now so I'm out of luck on both right now lol. I really want a tri gear.

Thank you Ray.

Ray, IF you can get SPA/WW to build you a B model Corvair mount, I highly doubt it will be a tri-gear mount. It just doesn't make any sense. The Corvair powered Sonex is already nose heavy, adding that nose gear is just going to make things worse. I don't think they really ever built any A model tri-gear mounts either. Flying the tailwheel Sonex is so simple that it really shouldn't keep you from going that direction.

Good luck getting a response directly from WW... I would continue working with SPA. The B model seems better suited for a Corvair than the A, I'm not sure why they wouldn't make a mount for it. It seems like a day's work making the jig would sell them a bunch of engines. Who knows.

I haven't been her lately, I am sorry I just seen this. Someone has made a tri gear mount for a Waiex legacy model. And it has a 100HP Corvair, I was gonna go with the 125 HP Corvair it is about 8lbs lighter then the other models of the Corvair engines. WW commented he would build a engine mount for anyone who needed one if that was the only way the person could use a Corvair...I beat around the bush a few times but he never come out and said he would build one for a Wairx B model because Dan dosen't see a demand for them..maybe not now but I bet in the future there will be. If I had the mount for a Corvair I would make an offer on the Waiex B model for sale on here... but no luck.I heard the Waiex is a bit tail heavy I figured withe tad more weight of the Corvair ..but even lighter with the 125 HP it would equal out...Guess I will build a Zodiac CH650B instead or the SPA Panther. I am not a fan of tail draggers....but I could change my mind I guess.Thank you for your reply Sir.
