.all earlier things listed ,are good things to check,
and please re-read the one listed by "by sonex1374 » Fri Aug 31, 2018 5:45 pm"
.
.my suggestion ; is about your question =.
"""Is there a way to check the coils with an ohmmeter? I understand these are Briggs and Stratton pn 394891""

my small idea is ;; yes thay can be checked with a ohmmeter , the ( how to )
is in most small engine "lawn mower" manuals....

also online price for the coil ""Briggs and Stratton pn 394891""" is less than 25 dollars

as a side story ; both times i went to my local "small engine shop" to buy a coil ,
they said the coils "do not often" go bad ,
but they always had one in stock..
......good day /rick

OK.
Ran separate ground wires to magnetrons...no change
Used a timing light to make a random index mark to find where 28 degrees BTDC is, then from that mark, checked secondary CDI ignition timing... wow it was about 40 degrees BTDC!!!! even though I set it according to picture in Aerovee manual.

Set cdi ignition to 28 degrees BTDC using timing light and index mark from primary ignition...

Now there is little to no drop in rpm during mag check. Also carb need further enriching due to timing change.

I'll have this thing running like a swiss watch soon...
