How High Have You Gone?

Postby Son_of_X » Sat Mar 30, 2013 4:23 pm

For people with completed Sonex projects, what is the maximum altitude you have taken your bird?
What engine/prop combo were you using at the time?

Today, third flight. 9200 ft. But field elevation is only 6800ft here.
Jab3300, Prince PTip. Once out of Phase 1, I'll take her up to Leadville, 9900ft. I'd like to see if I can get it to 18,000ft. I have a portable oxygen tank.

14,500'. Had difficulty finding a good mixture to keep it running smooth (Jab 3300 and Aero Carb).

Gary, you need to come down and fly with me and Zack at KFLY. Zack is my hangar mate.
Zack can't fly above 14k without a transponder, but I'm game to see if my Jab3300 will go to 18k.

Hi John,
Look forward to meeting you soon. I am on call this weekend so I can't venture far but hope to get a little air time in this weekend. Also need to do an oil change after flying 4000 miles last week to sun n fun and back. Give me a call sometime so we can plan something.

How was the trip Gary? I bet it was an adventure! Are you doing an Oshkosh trip as well?

I think I finally figured out my cooling issues and today, just let the plane climb. I topped out at 14,000ft. In the shadow of Pikes Peak, 14,110ft and 25 miles away. The Jab was giving me about 2600RPM at full throttle at 14K and wasn't running great despite my mixture adjustments. I was showing about 100mph IAS air speed and could still squeeze 100fpm climb rate. I didn't have O2 so I decided to chop and drop back to comply with FARs. Back down at 9000, she screamed at 3000 RPM and 145 mph IAS. A really good day of flying.
