FAA AC 90-89A section 4 "Test Pilot"

Postby Sonex1517 » Tue Mar 26, 2013 7:29 pm

A question for those who made their first flight in a Sonex, preferably Jabiru 3300 powered, as a sport pilot with no current medical.

The AC states the following:

TEST PILOT REQUIREMENTS.
a. A test pilot should meet the following mini- mum qualifications:
(1) Physically fit: Test flying an aircraft is a stressful and strenuous task
(2) No alcohol or drugs in the last 24 hours
(3) Rated, current, and competent in the same category and class as the aircraft being tested
(4) Current medical and biennial or flight review as appropriate, or a current USUA certifi- cation and flight review

As interpreted, this means the sport pilot compliant Sonex would NOT require the test pilot to have a medical. I interpret it this way as it states "as appropriate."

If anyone made a first flight in their Jabiru 3300 powered Sonex under sport pilot rules, please reply or PM me.

Thank you!

I don't have the 3300 but I do have a 3.0 Corvair powered tail dragger. I've done the first flight in both of the Sonex aircraft I have owned.

For a Sport Pilot, a driver's licence is proof of medical fitness to fly i.e. "safe enough to drive, safe enough to fly." But we are all required to evaluate our current medical condition before every flight.

Hope this helps ...

I believe the Sport Pilot license is a self certifying medical. So you have it if you say you are fit, and hold a current drivers license.

You are correct. The driver's license is key. If a Sport Pilot has their driver's license suspended or revoked they then must obtain a third class medical in order to be able to exercise Sport Pilot privileges.
