Tail spring slop

I’m plans building and the tail spring weldment calls out for .750 dim 4130 tubing with a wall thickness of .049 so that is what I used. The ti spring rod is .625 dim. So .027 of slop. Is this correct? Thanx billy

Mine was sloppy. I bonded it in while the fuselage was upside down. That means the epoxy holds the spring so any impact is metal to metal.

Yes, sad but true. If you are making your own fitting, use 0.058" WT tube for a much better fit, or better still, use 0.065" WT tube, but you will need to run a 5/8" drill or reamer through the tube for the tail spring to fit.

Darn it. Already done and on. So do I buy New over size ti or can I use shim material?

I used some stainless shim material, .010 wrapped around the rod..

A slight bit of movement left in it... epoxying the lot in would fix it but couldn't be bothered

I had a 1/4-28 nut welded to the bottom aft of the tube and used a set screw to remove the slop. Put a small piece of nylon between the titanium and set screw to avoid fretting too.

The part purchased from Sonex also had a LOT of slop, even with their thick powder coat. Powder coat was not even so ran in tool to level it out, then wrapped spring in multiple turns of 0.004" SS shim stock. If was making these from scratch, would go ahead and remake with the heavier wall tubing or will be kicking yourself every time you look at it.

Thanx for all the help...should have used .058.

I used 0.004" SS shim material as a wrap around the rod. Worked great, no slop now. I punched a hole in the shim so the bolt keeps it in place. The end of the shim is flush with the end of the tube.
