Fix for forward wing skins

I have drilled my holes to the normal #30 for 1/8" rivets on the forward wing skins. After dimpling I found that that now my holes are over sized and the ccc-42 rivets don't grip good. I know now I should have drilled with a slightly smaller bit, but it is too late for the holes I have drilled now! Any one else make this same mistake? I am looking to use an oversize rivet for these holes, if I can fin one.

Cherry max makes 5/32 dia pull rivets. They won't be cheap though.

I've bought from here a couple times. I did a quick search and found standard "nail type" stainless steel flush rivets in 5/32 size.

However, the grip range might not work with the one I saw. I'd give these guys a call. They have about every rivet imaginable.

I made the mistake of aggressively deburring my flight controls to the point of slightly countersinking both sides of the skins / ribs. I thought about upsizing to 5/32" right away, but, decided to try oversizing the holes with a #27 reamer drill bit. It worked great in removing the slight counter sink leaving a nice reamed oversize hole for riveting. I riveted it all together with standard oversize cherry max rivets from aircraft spruce.

I would try fitting an oversized cherry max rivet in your dimpled holes before upsizing to 5/32". Might save you a lot of redrilling and deburring, plus, the cherry max rivets are a locking collar rivet that locks the mandrel once pulled. The only downside is you need to pull them with a cherry max rivet gun, I was lucky that I had access to one for my snafu.

I set rivets in dimpled #30 holes and it seemed ok. The rivet seemed loose before I pulled it but fine after.

Hi jake,
Yes a #40 drill and the DIENQ die set from cleveland tools is a good combo. Nice and tight for 1/8 ss rivets. I would go w 5/32 ss countersunk pull rivets , or oversize cherry max, but then u need the special riveter. Good luck , let us know how it goes!

Hi Jake, the Cherrymax CR3242-4 rivets are intended for a 0.140" hole but have the same size head as the standard CR3212-4, which might be a better option than going for a 5/32" rivet and finding that you need to re-dimple the holes for the larger rivets. I have used an ordinary pop riveter to install Cherrymax rivets. I'm not sure why it's not OK.
When I was riveting my wing with the standard SS rivets and had some (lots) of the stems break off protruding from the rivet, one of the things I tried was to drill out the rivet and fit CR3242-4-1 rivets. It didn't work well because the stem pulled through too far trapping the little "anvil" washer which is normally discarded. I think that was because the hole was already badly pulled out of shape by the SS rivet. They might work OK in your case.
If you'd like to try the process without laying out money on the rivets, I have about 5 or 6 CR3242-4-1 left over and can post them to you. Postage from Australia usually takes less than 2 weeks so it's not a huge wait.

Are the over size cherry max rivets flush, or do they have the domed head? The ones I am seeing on aircraft spruce appear to have the domed head. Thanks everyone for the help.

You would need the CR3242, countersunk oversized. I used a lot of the CR3243 universal head 4-1 and 4-2's for my ailerons and flaps.

The cherry max is a 100 degree head though, not 120 like the Avex.
