Sonex #1085 Has Flown

Postby Direct C51 » Sun Nov 12, 2017 2:22 am

I'm a little late on the post, but I am happy to report that I completed Sonex #1085 and got the AW inspection on Sep 20 2017. I flew it on it's maiden flight on 26 Sep. It is a standard gear, dual stick Sonex with Acro ailerons and a 120HP Corvair. I bought the kit second hand in Oct 2014 with everything in the boxes and a little work completed on the vertical stab. I pulled the engine out of a 1965 Corvair and completely rebuilt it myself using William Wynnes conversion manual and Sport Performance Aviation parts. I'm still early in the testing, but it flies great, climbs great, and seems to be capable of going pretty fast.

Looks great. I like the mostly al cowl. Congratulations on getting it airborne. One of the many good things about home building is that even the testing is fun.

Thanks guys. Bryan, we were in a secret race for awhile, until you had to pause the project. For a long time, you would post an update and it would be something I was working on or just completed also. Ok it wasn't really a race, but thanks for the motivation on the days when I was feeling like being lazy. Hopefully I can return the favor by telling you that you are getting close. I was where you are now when you had to shift focus off of your Sonex. I think 2018 is easily attainable.

Nice job on your Sonex!

Very good looking plane, nice workmanship.

I've always thought the Corvair engine to be a good option for Sonex aircraft.

Awesome!!!!

Cowl looks pretty cool. I’ve got a 3.0corvair for my waiex project, be interested to learn more about your cowling and carb heat setup. Post some pics of the details?

All the best, Gordon

Bryan, we were in a secret race for awhile, until you had to pause the project.

I like the race game, though I never seem to win. Scott and Darick were close but blew me away. I thought I could take Ryan but seems like he is back to the task. I'm still ahead of Ken but for how long? All in fun and we should all inspire one another.

I think my next Waiex will be corvair powered.

Congratulations!

I am also very interested in hearing details and seeing photos of the Corvair installation.
