Sonex 800 Wiring Diagram

Postby falvarez » Sat Dec 29, 2012 8:27 pm

I saw that Mike was working on his panel on the Yahoo forum, so I decided to take advantage of feedback and started to put together my wiring diagram / panel layout. I gathered information from many sources to put this together including the the AeroElectric Z-Diagrams. This is pretty much a basic panel with Overvoltage Protection / Alternator Switch and 3 Annunciator Lights. I welcome any feedback.

Below is a link to a PDF of the Wiring Diagram for my Sonex...

I have received feedback regarding the 4 awg wire to the Master Solenoid and that this seems excessive (which I agree); however, it seems that all the Z-Diagrams from AeroElectric use this approach...I'm curious as to what others have done.

Below is a picture of my interior / panel...

If you wire as per your drawing you will need the 4awg wire from the battery to the master.

A small change I would make, would be to take the 4awg direct from the battery to the starter relay instead of having your starter motor current going through the master relay. You could then reduce the size of your master relay feed wire.

Thanks Steve, that's similar to the feedback I received earlier. One question...if I do that, is the starter no longer tied to the Master Switch (i.e. I would then be able to engage the starter w/ the Master off?) I'm hoping to make sure that the starter can't engage unless the Master is on. I may be a bit confused here, so any help is appreciated.

No it will be fine. You wont be able to engage the stater unless the master switch is on. The starter push button is fed off the main bus which is supplied off the master relay.

Okay...it finally sunk in...the starter can't engage w/o the positive voltage from the main bus; therefore, it is controlled by the Master Switch. Thanks for the feedback, I have updated the diagram to reflect this change.

Also, Kip...I would greatly appreciate seeing your wiring diagrams....I'm sure there is plenty I can learn from them. Post a link if you have one, or if you'd rather email them, please send them to sonex800 "at" comcast "dot" net
