Splice plate fitment question

Postby N814W » Wed Jun 07, 2017 2:18 pm

Do the F21-07 splice plates need radiused to nest into the vertical cross tie channels? This doesn't look right...

I don't recall having to do it on my Sonex but if it won't fit flat against the angle without a radius, that's what you have to do. A bevel would also be OK.

There, I fixed it.

But leads to the next question - should the little spacers be tapered? The aft edge of the lower cross tie skin is about a skin's thickness proud of the lower longerons.

Regarding splice plates, here's a very minor item you might want to look at: A couple of years ago, while working on the forward/aft fuselage splices, I found that the Aft Fuselage Floor Spacer (ONX-F21-10) was too thick. Unless Sonex has modified this part, it is still 1/8" thick. If you do the math, however, you'll find that the spacer should be 1/8" minus the thickness of the bottom flange of the Lower Cross Tie #1 (ONX-F19-05), which works out to 0.093" (or about 3/32"). If the thicker spacer is used, the Lower Horizontal Splice Plates (ONX-F21-06 R/L) will be rotated slightly along their longitudinal axes. I remade the parts, but you might want to check yours to see how thick it is. Getting it right will improve the fit.

Still 0.125". Took a bunch of filing and sore thumbs, but I got them thinned down and the cross-tie figment looks good.
