Folks,

The AeroVee uses thick-walled 92mm cylinders that require machining the case and heads. As always, be wary of information disseminated on the internet.

Sounds like this is not an option:

90.5's would not fit the case/heads nor would it make sense since the wall thickness concern is no concern.
I found this info on the VW forums regarding the different wall thicknesses for the different cylinder sizes:

.179" = 92mm thickwall
.177" = 88mm machine-in
.163" = 85.5mm
.148" = 90.5mm
.140" = 94mm
.118" = 92mm thinwall

Looks like the 92 thickwalls are actually the thickest you an get.
