Aerovee and aerobatics

Postby marco330 » Thu Aug 18, 2011 4:25 am

Hi people,
I am interested in building and flying a Onex with the Aerovee engine. The standard Aerovee is OK for all the postive G aerobatics, add a oil separator and there should be no problem ... But the guys at Sonex have announced an Aerovee upgrade for the Sonex Sport Acro: inverted oil and fuel. Now combine this with the turbo project, put this in a Onex and you will have a rocket ship for aerobatics ! Just a suggestion ... Does anybody know if the inverted oil and fuel systems are affecting the size of the firewall foreward package?

Anyone have a source for DIY oil separator? Would this one from Jegs Be suitable for a VW?

It will be great to have inverted fuel and oil. Way cool. But remember that a Onex often weighs just as much as a full size Sonex. So I wouldn't think it would be any more of a rocket than a standard Sonex with the same engine.

If anyone builds a Onex that ends up weighing as much as a Sonex, they made some very poor choices during their build!

The website lists the Onex as 600lbs and the Sonex as 620lbs. That's only a difference of ~3% or about 3 gallons of fuel. Same weight might have been an exaggeration, but I think his point still stands that weight alone doesn't make the Onex more of a rocket ship than the Sonex.

The 620 lb Sonex was bare metal, with a single center stick, no tail tips, and a very basic instrument panel, with a 2200 jabiru. How many Sonex do you think you can find that have an empty weight anywhere close to that? Every one I have seen the weight and balance papers of have been in the neighborhood of 670 lbs, and some even heavier than that. The Onex weight of 600 is much more realistic. The "real world" difference is in the neighborhood of 50 lbs, and usually more, which is much more significant.

I built my own version using a Ball pint jar with the vent tube entering center and vent holes surrounding it. A stainless chore ball in the top is the filter. I didn't want to drain blow by oil back into the engine and the jar is removable just by loosening the lid band and removing the jar. It is also calibrated in oz's so you can keep track of how much is coming out that way and estimate oil burn in the engine.

My Sonex is 654 lbs. The Onex I was flying with a couple of weeks ago is 623. I guess I considered that "close."
