Spacing for throttle, mixture, trim

The way I have my panel laid out, there is a 2.5" spacing. The C182 in my hangar has 3" spacing between the throttle and mixture. Is 2.5" enough?

mock it up with some cardboard or scrap plywood and a glue gun.
Sit in he cockpit and make some airplane noises. Adjust as needed.

We met last summer at the Poplar Grove fly in. I have a similar instrument panel set up as yours, with mixture, throttle & trim controls, along with fuses and switches, mounted on a lower sub panel. I placed the mixture, throttle & trim controls as close together as physically possible due to limited panel space. Although I have not yet flown the aircraft, I have ran the engine several times and did not have any issues with the mixture / throttle placement. Perhaps I will change my mind after actual flight.

Hey Terry, good to hear from you again. Boy you are close! The panel looks good. I am planning a Cessna style throttle rather than a quadrant, otherwise our panels are similar. I am working out concepts for reversing the direction of travel. I see you also have the center controls. Looks great!

We mocked up the controls.



We downsized the control knob size but our fingers got pinched between the trim and the mixture. I think we are going to mount the intercom on the angled panel, the transponder as far right as it will go, and move the trim to the right.

The fake throttle is mounted to a 1/4" steel rod and the mixture to a wood dowel. There is a 2x4 behind the fake panel section. It has 1/4" through holes for the fake controls.

What size knobs are you guys using? FAA size or smaller?

Like the idea of standard Cessna style throttle control, however I'm sure you are aware the Aeroinjector uses a reverse movement control. So if you push with a vernier style throttle, it will close the aeroinjector slide plate- unless you fashion some sort of 180 degree reversing linkage.

Hope that makes sense, and you've thought that out?

Make sure your cables clear the bottom of the tank. I mounted my mixture dead center and it was a challenge to snake it around the cutoff valve.

Another thing Bryan, I've flown with the DialATrim and you may want to make sure you can turn the knob without your knuckles hitting anything. You will be giving it a few full turns while adjusting trim and its not just finger tight. It takes a bit of torque.

That is why I am moving the trim to the right for more space. Our airplane noises were interrupted by "ow, ow" as our knuckles hit the mocked up mixture.

Somebody had a picture where they mounted a little knob on their dial a trim. Any pics/part numbers/sources? I searched but did not find.
