Sport Trainer flap and Brake Mod

Postby pauldblackmore » Fri Jan 06, 2017 12:32 am

Hi All,

I would like to share some pics of a mod I have made to the centre control flap handle and brakes on my Sonex Tri Gear. The mod is driven by negative experiences i have had with the standard sport trainer design wearing and then being prone to jumping out of the full flap detent position on finals, as well as an associated project to upgrade to Matco hydraulic brakes. Photos can be found at the link below.

The mod also incorporates a Matco park brake valve which is actuated by a plunger also mounted on the flap control. While it has not flown yet the ergonomics seem great. Flap control is really positive with a handbrake style thumb button to actuate, and the position of the park brake is such that it would be difficult to accidentally land with it in the on position. It is however heavier and more complex than the original design.

Cheers

Hi Paul

I like it, looks good too. Is the notches bracket stiff enough? It looks like the bracket also stabilizes that long handle with also the brake handle on it.

Hi Gordon,

The brackets ( there is one on each side tied together via a bolt and spacer) is 304 Stainless Steel, cut by laser cutter. I used SS as AL would wear quickly. The bracket is certainly Stiff enough, although the attachment to the 032" spar tunnel initially was not. I have installed some 1" angle to stiffen this up. If doing again I would change this aspect. The notches bracket is spaced about 1/8" from the handle so does not provide support.
